With the opening of the secondary school in Djangoa, we have introduced environmental education at the Mamiko school. This course is designed to touch upon the most pressing environmental issues in Madagascar, which the children can see around them, namely:
-
absence of waste management
-
deforestation of the mangroves in coastal areas
-
burn-and-slash agriculture.
Equipped with carefully selected books, ad hoc didactic materials and a training kindly offered by the NGO Blue Ventures, our very motivated teacher Eric every week teaches the Mamiko children how to protect their rich surrounding nature.

A highlight for the students is the creation of ecobricks, a clever way of capturing the plastic waste into bottles, that can be use to construct small furniture.

As a culmination of the environmental education course, we organised a school trip to the Lokobe Nature Reserve in the nearby island of Nosy Be for all the students of the Mamiko secondary school.
